WHEN DADDY LEAVES

WHEN DADDY LEAVES

THEY WAVE GOODBYE FROM THE PIER.
THEY WATCH DADDY'S SHIP AS IT DISAPPEARS.

THEY STAND THERE PROUD OF THAT SAILOR MAN.
ALTHOUGH THEY SEEM TO YOUNG TO UNDERSTAND.

IT'S NOT EASY FOR THEM WHEN DADDY LEAVES.
FOR WHEN HE'S GONE, MOM IS DAD IT SEEMS.

SHE DOES THOSE THINGS HE USED TO DO.
A BOUNCE ON HER KNEE, PLAY CARS AND TRUCKS TOO.

BUT IT'S NOT THE SAME AS WHEN HE WAS HERE.
BUT WHEN HE IS GONE, THERE'S SPECIAL TIME TO SHARE.

A CALENDAR THEY'LL MAKE TO MARK OFF EACH DAY.
TO MARK OFF EACH MONTH HE'LL BE AWAY.

WHEN THAT LAST DAY COMES THAT THEY'LL HAVE TO WAIT,
THEY SILENTLY PRAY, "DADDY, PLEASE DON'T BE LATE."

"PLEASE LOOK FOR ME DADDY, I'LL BE WAVING AT YOU."
"STANDING NEXT TO MOMMY, IN A SHIRT BRAND NEW."

"MY TRUCKS AND TOYS ARE IN MY ROOM ALL ALONE."
"FOR THEY HAVE WAITED SO LONG, FOR YOU TO COME HOME."

"I CAN SAY THE ABC'S NOW AND COUNT NUMBERS AND SUCH."
"PLEASE DON'T BE SAD BECAUSE I'VE GROWN UP SO MUCH."

THERE ARE THOUSANDS OF THESE KIDS WHO'S DADDY'S ARE GONE.
WHO EACH DAY WAIT PATIENTLY FOR THEM TO COME HOME.

WE CALL THEM MILITARY BRATS, BUT LET US ALL KNOW,
THEY ARE LITTLE BOYS AND GIRLS, WHO'S DADDY ISN'T HOME.

SP PLEASE DON'T CALL THEM BRATS OR THINK THEY'RE SPOILED ROTTEN.
FOR THEY CARRY A HEAVY LOAD AND ARE THE ONES OFTEN FORGOTTEN.

LET'S BE PROUD OF THEM EVEN WHEN THEY WEEP.
WHEN THE NAVY SAYS, "DADDY HAS TO LEAVE."
